Terug naar de Bron / Back to the source

A year after the start of the Panta Rei project I am back at the source of the Rhine, lake Toma in Switzerland. After the intense working period that I had here last year it feels familiar being back. This time the circumstances are completely different. Last year the weather conditions made the area accessible in spite of it's inhospitable nature. This time it's different. Wind and rain accompanied me on my walk to the hut. This was no different the next day when I went out looking for the objects that I left behind last year.
I did not honestly expect to find any of them back, as I expected them to get carried away by the molten water of a high wall of snow that would form during the winter. But, once I raised to my feet after finding a dry place to lay down my backpack, I immediately stood face to face with one of my left-behind objects. Remarkably, it no longer stood in the same place where I left it. A further search yielded me one other object; this one did still stand where I had left it. Of the last two only the card remained, and the objects had disappeared. Because the rain and the wind became stronger I decided to come back later to retrieve the objects and take pictures.

Things went differently than expected. A bit of rain turned into a lot of rain. The wind grew in strength, and eventually became a storm which eventually became a hurricane. The next day, when the wind reduced, rain became snow. Fully in line with the character of the Panta Rei project every premeditated plan did not work. Stagnation is what the flow gave me. Meditation and contemplation instead of action and production.

Later, when the weather allowed it, I went back to retrieve the objects and finish this part of the project. I was wondering if the hurricane had left the untied object or  taken it? I found it back, again in another position. Things are on the move now... If I don't take it, it will travel on it's own!

De tweede Bron / The second source.

The second source river from the Rhine, the Hinterrhein, springs out of the Paradies glacier. The landscape shaped by the river is totally different from that at lake Toma. The valley is narrow and steep, making the source hard to reach. I was glad that I was treated with the first sunny day to make the trip to the mountain hut.

This first sunny day appeared to be the last one. The next day when moving further towards the source the weather was gray and drizzling. This emphasized the atmosphere of the valley I entered called Ursprung. This area is uncompromising. As a human being you are nothing here. Also no area to walk in and casually start making some works. Everything I had prepared was tiny and detracted from the immense forces present here. Once I came to that conclusion, it gave me an incentive to further explore the valley. I kept being confronted by my own limitations. Several times I was at a point where I had to make a choice to keep going or not. Is it worth it? Can I handle it? Does it add to the project?

Eventually the mountains gave all the answers and this led me to a tiny stream coming from the rocks. This was my final frontier for now. Still under the glacier but far enough. I'm not getting any closer under these circumstances.

I started following this newborn river passing in between beautiful "Melting stones" and ice caps to end up in an immense debris river. Trekking through this debris and eventually back to the hut. Ready! Time to go home.

The idea of going home was a nice fantasy, but nature decided otherwise. If I had encounter quite some snow last week, it was peanuts compared to what was awaiting me this time. The next day I could not go anywhere. My activities consist of clearing snow, chopping wood and looking out of the window. The day after was beautiful in a magical landscape but again I could not go anywhere due to avalanche risk. On day three I could finally go down, early in the morning over the frozen snow. Back home! The trip continues in my studio!

In the month of may I was given the opportunity to work and exhibit in the watchpost in Millingen. The watchpost is right at the point where the Rhine is split into the Waal and the Pannersch channel, the latter of which eventually becomes the Rhine that meets the sea at Katwijk. This is also the starting point of the river delta. Up to this point the river follows its natural course. From this point onwards the eternal struggle between man and water begins.

The Watchpost has the appearance of a stark and impenetrable fortress. Reality is different: artists are very welcome here. Here, the works that had already been materialized in the Panta Rei project were also able to find a natural place for themselves. The cloths made at the source of the Rhine found their place outside, exposed to the elements as at the place where they were made. The "Melting Stones" ended up in the stairwell of the building. Upstairs in beautiful daylight was the place for the "Sources" with a place of honor for the last "Source" in the panoramic room.

My prolonged stay at the watchpost is an alienating experience. There is an 180 degree panoramic view that grants me a total overview of the river, and the continuous coming and going of ships with all the associated activities. Looking from above, not hearing anything, the view eventually becomes abstract and soothing. It goes on and on, but soon it no longer intrudes into my inner space. And the river, it just flows on and on.

Het werkproces / The working process.

Mijn tijdelijke atelier /My tempory studio

The essence of the Panta Rei project is to let go of control and move with the flow. Yet during my preparations for my stay here I could not resist to contrive some certainties. When I visited the spot in advance in February I already went looking for spots to find my basic materials sand, clay and gravel. On the other side of the river I found a stone mill. The romanticist in me already saw a clay pit there with old clay layers up for grabs. The reality was different. The clay lit was there but al the materials were brought in and mixed with other materials to create the best manageable substance. I also found spots to pick up beautiful sand and gravel, but when I needed these deposits these during my stay they were unreachable due to high water. The circumstances seemingly forced me to let go of control and go with the flow.

The starting point when making my primal landscapes is often a natural matter fully adapted to the convenience of man. During the work process I search for a state of purity in which the matter begins to resemble its natural state. Jokingly I like to compare the creation of my Primal landscapes to a trip from the Gamma (a lumberyard) to God. In the Panta Rei project thus far the starting materials were white wood, MDF and plasterboard. I took these with me to Millingen. The materials that inspired me the most in these surroundings were willow branches. These grow everywhere in this environment. Willow branches also form a connection to my previous working location in Katwijk, where they were used for dike maintenance.

At the start of the creative process my interest rapidly shifted from the materials that I brought with me to the locally harvested willow branches. This tendency continued on during the rest of the week. The first work was rich in variety in sand, clay and gravel. In the last work only willow branch and clay remained.

De andere kant van de stroom / The other side of the stream.

On the other side of the stream, at the mouth of the river in Katwijk, things are very different than at the source of the river in Switzerland. Over there it does not matter what plans mankind has for the river. That is up to the water and the mountains.

At the mouth of the river, where and when the water flows is fully controlled by men.
Where the river meets the sea the tables get turned. Where and when water flows is fully controlled by man. The objective is to maintain the stream and to protect the land from the seawater. Whether or not the stream is allowed to flow is a purely rational decision. Impressive structures have been erected to accomplish this.

As I cycled over this structure on a regular base, the idea for the Panta Rei project began to take shape within me. In my work the tension between nature's individual identity and the intentions of man is a universally present factor. Here in Katwijk the identity of the river is fully encapsulated. This inspired me to travel to the source of the river to further investigate this tension.

At this moment in Katwijk, a lot of work is in progress to reinforce the coastline in order to match the rising sea level. This means that the spillway of the river also has to be modified. This  basically means excavating the bottom and plaster it like a highway. Not unlike how a painter prepares his canvas, the riverbed is also prepared with sustainable cloth and willow branches.

The river banks also have to be adjusted. New, higher dams guide the water to the sea. Striking is that new basalt blocks rapidly attain a beautiful green color due to growing seaweed. A local passer-by told me this weed was intestine whose  that I harvested to use in my studio.

My impressions at the spillway of the Rhine at Katwijk led to a diptych. The inspiration is the contrast between the uncontrolled conditions at the source of the river, and man's desire for full control at the other end of the river. The flow of the river is rationalized, the flow of creativity certainly is not.

The used materials also come from both sides of the river. Clay and gravel from the source and clay and sand adhered at the mouth of the river throughout the centuries. This is connected by the seaweed soon after a new human intervention took place.
